State governments across Nigeria are now receiving far more money following the removal of fuel subsidy, according to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who spoke during an end-of-year media briefing in Port Harcourt.

Wike said the policy decision taken by President Bola Tinubu has changed the financial standing of many states, with several now preparing annual budgets that exceed one trillion naira, a level he said was impossible in previous years.
He explained that the increase in funds has also drawn political attention, as many people are now eager to benefit from the larger resources available at the state level, often through indirect means.

Wike noted that during his eight years as governor of Rivers State, the highest amount received from the federation account in a single year was below N200 billion, contrasting that with the current inflows to states after subsidy removal.
Using the FCT as an example, he said Abuja still receives a small share from the federation account and relies heavily on internally generated revenue, yet has managed visible improvements in infrastructure and public services.
He urged Nigerians to hold their governors accountable for how the increased funds are spent, adding that better use of the money should lead to improved living conditions, while stressing that leadership and goodwill remain as important as funding.
