Nigeria’s electoral umpire and the courts have confirmed Barrister Maxwell Mgbudem as the national chairman of the Accord Party, ending months of leadership disputes within the party.

The decision affects the Accord Party and its members nationwide, with the confirmation announced on Tuesday at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja during a world press conference.
The recognition followed a National Convention held in July 2024 in Abuja, which the party said was conducted in line with its constitution, the Electoral Act, and INEC guidelines, with officials of the commission present to monitor the process.
Party leaders explained that Mgbudem and members of the National Working Committee emerged from that convention through proper voting and were duly sworn in, making the leadership legitimate under party and electoral rules.

On the legal side, Accord said several court cases challenging the leadership had either been struck out or clarified, adding that interim court orders were temporary and had since expired, while courts affirmed that internal party matters should be resolved according to party rules.
Mgbudem said the party has now moved past the crisis, noting that its disciplinary organs and National Executive Committee have endorsed the current leadership and shifted focus to upcoming elections, including governorship races and the 2027 general polls.
