The decision was announced in Washington after President Donald Trump directed homeland security authorities to halt the programme as part of broader security measures.

The move followed investigations linking the suspect, a Portuguese national who entered the US through the green card lottery, to the Brown University attack and another killing involving an MIT professor.

Officials said the suspension came after concerns that the visa route could be abused, with authorities tracing the suspect’s residency status back to the programme introduced to support migration from underrepresented countries.

The shooting occurred during final exams at Brown University in mid December, causing panic on campus and prompting a nationwide security review of immigration and campus safety.

The diversity visa scheme, which offers up to 50,000 green cards yearly, will remain suspended while the US government reviews its impact and considers further steps to prevent similar incidents.
