LASU Community Anger Over Viral Bandit Prank Video

A viral video showing young men dressed like armed extremists storming Lagos State University has stirred outrage on campus.

The clip, posted on December 5 by Datreez Entertainment TV, captured the group wearing turbans and desert-style outfits as they sped into a crowd of students, causing panic at a time when attacks in Niger and Kebbi States have raised public fear.

The creators later removed the video and issued an apology, saying the entire scene was staged with willing participants and meant only for entertainment. Their statement claimed no one was placed in danger and admitted the timing was insensitive given the country’s security concerns. They also apologised to the school’s management.

The stunt has drawn frustration from student content creators, who say security officers are now seizing phones and restricting filming on campus. Some creators, including Anuoluwapo, Tush Agbero, and Temmytayo GP, posted reactions lamenting that the prank has made creative work on campus more difficult. They argue it has set back the growing content culture among students.

LASU, in its own statement, distanced itself from the recording and faulted the act as unauthorised and unacceptable. The institution said it does not condone content that imitates terrorism or creates fear within the school community. It urged students to stay alert and report suspicious behaviour to campus security.

The incident has revived discussions about how far content creators should go and where safety and creativity should meet. LASU, known for its vibrant content culture, now joins other institutions such as the University of Lagos, which earlier placed limits on filming on campus to prevent misuse and misrepresentation.
