Nyesom Wike has vowed that founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party will not allow newcomers from other political platforms to weaken or derail the party.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory made the declaration during the PDP’s 104th National Executive Committee meeting held at his Abuja residence on Sunday.

He condemned a faction within the party for conducting what he called an unlawful convention despite two Federal High Court judgments already addressing the issue. He argued that the group bypassed the rulings and instead obtained an ex parte order from a State High Court in a bid to force recognition for their process.

Wike questioned how the faction could ignore final judgments and still insist on leading the party. He noted that the same group later returned to court seeking validation after moving ahead with the disputed convention, raising concerns about consistency and respect for due process.

He warned that such behaviour risks damaging the party’s future and insisted that the PDP must uphold its own rules if it hopes to regain public trust. He urged members to defend the party’s foundation and reject any actions driven by personal interest.
Wike called for unity under lawful leadership, stressing that only transparency and commitment can help rebuild the PDP and restore its place in national politics. He reminded members that the party, which has existed since 1998, cannot survive if internal laws are ignored.
At the meeting, the Board of Trustees also encouraged the NEC to put a Caretaker Committee in place as the tenure of the current National Working Committee ends on Monday. BoT Chairman Senator Mao Ohuabunwa said the move follows the party’s constitution and is aimed at keeping the organisation stable, especially in states and zones where congresses could not hold earlier.
He added that ongoing efforts to install temporary leadership structures in areas such as Anambra and the South-East will help prevent gaps and support the wider reform process within the party.
