Taraba politics is heading for a major shift as Governor Agbu Kefas prepares to formally join the All Progressives Congress in January 2026.

His move was initially planned for 19 November but was pushed back after the kidnapping of students in Kebbi State, which he said made it improper to hold political events during a national security crisis.

The confirmation came on Sunday from APC state chairman Ibrahim Tukur during a press conference in Jalingo. He explained that although the governor had already been received at the ward level, the public ceremony would not take place this December due to the heavy end-of-year schedule and the festive season.

Tukur said Governor Kefas had completed all membership processes, noting that ward executives had formally accepted his registration. According to him, the governor is already recognised in party records as an APC member.
He also announced that 15 members of the Taraba State House of Assembly and the entire state executive council had moved to the APC, describing the wave of defections as part of a broader political realignment around the governor.
Party leaders, he added, had unanimously chosen January as the most suitable month for the official reception. He said the exact date would be announced once internal arrangements are finalised, signalling a major opening to the new political year for the ruling party.
