President Bola Tinubu has nominated General Christopher Gwabin Musa as the new Minister of Defence, following the resignation of Mohammed Badaru.

Tinubu forwarded the nomination to Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Monday, asking the lawmakers to confirm Musa as Badaru’s replacement.

Musa, who will be 58 on December 25, previously served as Chief of Defence Staff from 2023 to October 2025. He is a career officer with decades of operational and leadership experience and received the Colin Powell Award for Soldiering in 2012.

Born in Sokoto in 1967, he completed his basic education there before moving to the College of Advanced Studies in Zaria. He graduated in 1986 and joined the Nigerian Defence Academy the same year, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1991. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant the same year.
Over the years, he has held key roles including General Staff Officer, Training and Operations at 81 Division; Commanding Officer of 73 Battalion; Assistant Director of Operational Requirements at Army Headquarters; and Infantry Representative at the Nigerian Army Armour Corps training team.
Musa also served as Deputy Chief of Staff, Training and Operations at the Infantry Corps, and later commanded Sector 3 of Operation Lafiya Dole and the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad region. In 2021, he became Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, and later Commander of the Infantry Corps, before Tinubu appointed him Chief of Defence Staff in 2023.
Tinubu said he is confident Musa will strengthen Nigeria’s defence leadership as he steps into his new role.
