The Osun State House of Assembly Speaker, Adewale Egbedun, arrived at the venue of the Peoples Democratic Party governorship primary on Tuesday, where a clash broke out between his entourage and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The incident happened at the Adolak Event Centre in Osogbo after voting had already ended and most delegates had left.

Egbedun arrived with several lawmakers, government officials and aides who immediately objected to the conduct of the primary. Tension rose as he confronted INEC’s Public Relations Officer in Osun, Musa Olurode, during a heated exchange that led to pushing and assault by those around him. The Deputy Speaker, Akinyode Oyewusi, intervened and ordered the aides to stop, warning them not to use him as cover to attack the officials.

The speaker later moved into another section of the venue, where he expressed anger at the organisers, insisting that they lacked the authority to hold a primary in the state without the involvement of the party leadership in Osun. He maintained that the process was taken over by forces outside the state and that local structures were ignored.
Speaking to reporters, Egbedun accused those behind the exercise of acting on instructions from Oyo State. He said the lawmakers were surprised to hear that a primary was being held after earlier messages indicated that the congress had been postponed. He argued that the development showed disrespect to the PDP leadership in Osun.
He also directed a warning at Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, claiming the governor was using Osun as part of a political push ahead of the 2027 presidential race. According to him, the state would not allow itself to be controlled by external interests, noting that Osun has elected leaders, including 25 assembly members and several federal lawmakers, who remain committed to the PDP.
Egbedun insisted that the event was nothing more than a staged exercise and vowed that the actions taken on Tuesday would not be accepted by the Osun faction of the party.
