US Steps Up Work With Nigeria To Tackle Jihadist Violence

The United States War Department says it is deepening cooperation with Nigeria to curb deadly attacks carried out by jihadist groups, especially those targeting Christian communities.

The stance followed a meeting in Washington, D.C., where Congressman Riley M. Moore met with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and a high-level Nigerian delegation.

The discussion focused on the rising violence across Nigeria and the toll it continues to take on vulnerable groups. The US side described the attacks as horrific and assured Nigeria of its readiness to strengthen joint counterterrorism efforts.

The Nigerian officials shared concerns about the growing threat from Boko Haram, ISWAP, and armed militias, outlining ongoing challenges with security assistance, protection of at-risk communities, and tackling widespread unrest. They also requested deeper coordination to improve the country’s response.

Moore said the United States expects concrete action from Nigeria to protect Christians from targeted killings, displacement, and attacks. He added that Washington is prepared to offer support but wants to see clear steps taken on the ground.

The meeting also touched on the long-standing military aid provided to Nigeria. US lawmakers noted that future cooperation will depend on measurable progress against extremist violence, especially in the North-East and Middle Belt.

The engagement comes as the US House Appropriations Committee prepares a report on alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria and amid renewed debate following President Donald Trump’s redesignation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.” He has warned that continued killings could prompt tougher measures from Washington.

The talks coincided with fresh insecurity at home as gunmen abducted students and teachers from St. Mary’s Papiri Private Catholic Secondary School in Niger State, days after a similar attack in Kebbi. Authorities say rescue operations are underway.
