Obi Says Government Fueling Crisis In Opposition Parties

Peter Obi has accused the Federal Government of stirring unrest within major opposition parties while the country battles rising insecurity.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate made the claim in a post titled “Now Disgraced Nation” on his verified X account on Wednesday.

He said Nigeria was slipping deeper into trouble as officials focused on political infighting instead of urgent security issues. He pointed to recent violent incidents, including the killing of a senior military officer, the abduction of 25 female students, and another terror attack in Kwara, saying these events were reinforcing global views of Nigeria as a nation in distress.

Obi referenced remarks by President Donald Trump, who recently described Nigeria as “now disgraced.” He questioned why Nigerians should dismiss the comment, given the current state of the country.

He also criticised the wave of internal disputes tearing through the PDP, Labour Party, SDP and other parties. According to him, the tensions appeared “deliberately orchestrated by a government” that should instead be promoting unity at a critical time.

Obi contrasted the situation with the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s approach. He recalled that during a crisis in his own party years ago, Yar’Adua directed the then INEC chairman to protect the stability of all political parties because healthy political institutions are vital for democracy.

He said the opposite was happening today, accusing the government of trying to weaken the opposition by fragmenting the PDP, Labour Party, SDP and others.

Obi stressed that true democracy requires respect for opposition voices, credible elections and inclusive governance. He ended his message with his usual call for renewal: “A New Nigeria is Possible.”
