Rivers PDP Rejects Convention Outcome As INEC Stays Away

The Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has dismissed the PDP national convention held in Ibadan on Saturday, insisting that the exercise was unlawful and its decisions cannot hold.

The rejection was issued in a statement by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Kenneth Yowika, who commended the Independent National Electoral Commission for staying away from the convention. He said the commission acted within the law by respecting earlier rulings that barred the PDP from holding the event.

According to the Rivers PDP, two Federal High Courts had issued orders stopping the convention, while a separate ruling from an Ibadan High Court attempted to give clearance. Despite these conflicting judgments, the party proceeded to elect new national officers and dissolve some state executives.

Yowika described the event as a sham, accusing its organisers of ignoring valid court orders. He said INEC’s absence showed adherence to due process and a commitment to democratic norms.

He added that the Rivers PDP is confident the convention will be nullified once the matter is determined by the courts. He urged party members to remain calm and rely on the judicial process as the appeal continues.
