Senators from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday clashed on the floor of the Senate following the defection of Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe from the PDP to the APC.

Jarigbe, who represents Cross River North, had already joined the APC earlier in the year, but his defection was formally announced during plenary in Abuja. With his switch, all three senatorial seats in Cross River State are now held by the APC.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin described the wave of defections to the ruling party as a reflection of President Bola Tinubu’s “fatherly love and inclusive leadership.”

According to him, “Tinubu takes Nigeria as one. He started as a progressive and continues to show love to all Nigerians. Nigerians see him as the father of all.” Jibrin dismissed claims that the APC was working to make Nigeria a one-party state.
However, Minority Leader Abba Moro disagreed, arguing that most defectors were acting under pressure rather than conviction.
“Are you people happy now that you are in APC? You are not happy,” Moro said. “Those of us in the opposition are prepared to remain here to sustain democracy in Nigeria.”
Jarigbe’s defection further strengthens the APC’s dominance in the Senate, bringing its membership to 76 out of 109 senators. The PDP now has 25, the Labour Party 4, the All Progressives Grand Alliance 2, while the Social Democratic Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party have one senator each.
