Tinubu Ready To Approve Creation Of Anioma State

President Bola Tinubu has pledged to sign into law the bill seeking the creation of Anioma State with Asaba as its capital once it completes all constitutional processes in the National Assembly.

The assurance was revealed by Senator Ned Nwoko, who is spearheading the campaign for the establishment of the proposed state. Nwoko explained that the bill, introduced two years ago, aims to carve Anioma out of nine local government areas in Delta North — four in Aniocha and Oshimili, two in Ika, and three in Ndokwa. He added that some neighbouring communities, including Igbanke, have expressed interest in joining the new state.

According to him, the proposal recommends the creation of only one new state in the country — Anioma — to address the imbalance in the South-East geopolitical zone, which currently has five states compared to six in other regions. Nwoko said both Senate President Godswill Akpabio and President Tinubu are backing the process, describing it as a step toward equity and regional fairness.

The senator disclosed that consultations and lobbying efforts are ongoing among political leaders, traditional rulers, and stakeholders to build nationwide support. A regional adoption meeting is scheduled to hold in Awka, Anambra State, where governors, lawmakers, and Anioma leaders will officially endorse Anioma as their preferred new state.

He described the progress of the bill as a breakthrough for a movement that began in 1954, noting that the next steps include forwarding the documentation to the Presidency, securing approval from state assemblies and governors, and conducting a national referendum.

Nwoko urged the people of Anioma to stay united and prayerful as the constitutional process advances, assuring them that once all requirements are met, President Tinubu will sign the bill to officially create Anioma State.
