Anambra State voters are heading to the polls today, November 8, to elect their next governor.

About 2.8 million registered voters are expected to decide whether to keep the incumbent, Professor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), or choose a new leader from among 15 other contenders.

The election marks a crucial moment for the state as it is the first governorship poll to be conducted under the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, who assumed office on October 23. INEC confirmed that 2,802,790 voters are eligible to participate across 326 wards, including 140,370 newly registered voters.

Across the state, polling units began setting up as early as 8:30 a.m., with ad hoc staff and election materials arriving at various centers. In Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area, INEC officials were seen arranging materials at the Community Primary School for wards 01 and 02, as voters trickled in to check their names on the voter list.

The race has drawn a diverse field of 16 candidates, including Soludo of APGA, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sir Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), and Dr. George Moghalu of the Labour Party (LP). Others include Jude Ezenwafor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), John Nwosu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Chief Jeff Nweke of Action Alliance (AA).
Two women are among the candidates — Chioma Ifemeludike of the African Action Congress (AAC) and Ndidi Olieh of the National Rescue Movement (NRM). Additionally, six parties are fielding female deputy governorship candidates, marking an increase in women’s representation in the race.
INEC disclosed that over 24,000 ad hoc staff and 6,879 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices have been deployed across the 5,718 polling units. The commission also assured that logistics and security arrangements were in place to ensure a credible, peaceful, and transparent process.
As voting begins, all eyes are on Anambra to see whether voters will continue with Soludo’s administration or hand power to a new face promising change.
