CDD Raises Alarm Over Vote Buying Ahead Of Anambra Election

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD-West Africa) has warned that internal divisions within Nigeria’s main political parties could weaken competition in the upcoming Anambra governorship election.

The organisation expressed concern that the lack of unity among parties may discourage voter participation and undermine democratic integrity in the state.

Speaking at a press briefing in Awka, CDD-West Africa Director, Dr. Dauda Garuba, said most political parties have failed to mobilise or sensitise voters ahead of the poll. He noted that persistent conflicts within party structures have reduced their ability to present strong campaigns or offer voters clear choices.

Garuba also identified growing security threats in Ihiala, Nnewi South, Orumba South, and border communities such as Lilu, Azia, and Amorka. He warned that weak oversight of vigilante groups and the history of violence in these areas could discourage voter turnout unless security agencies act impartially and protect citizens during the election.

The CDD further criticised the N50 million billboard permit fee imposed by the Anambra State Signage and Advertisement Agency, describing it as a major barrier that raises campaign costs and limits access for smaller parties. The group said this policy gives an advantage to the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the incumbent governor, who already control state resources and visibility channels.

While acknowledging that INEC has made progress in its preparations, CDD said confidence in the process remains shaky due to logistical lapses observed during the Continuous Voter Registration exercise. The group urged the electoral body to ensure timely deployment of materials and maintain neutrality throughout the election period.

The organisation announced that it has deployed 178 accredited observers across the 21 local government areas of Anambra State, supported by 57 grassroots monitors and 30 mandate protection observers to track misinformation and electoral irregularities. CDD called on all stakeholders to resist vote buying, uphold peace, and place the nation’s democratic future above personal or political interests.
