IGP Calls For Peace Ahead Of Anambra Governorship Election

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has called on all candidates contesting in the upcoming Anambra governorship election to maintain peace before, during, and after the polls.

Egbetokun made the appeal during the signing of a peace accord by political party flag bearers at the International Conference Centre in Awka, the state capital. The event, organised by the National Peace Committee, brought together party leaders, security agencies, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society groups, and traditional rulers.

Represented by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Ben Okolo, the police chief urged all political actors to demonstrate tolerance, maturity, and respect for democratic principles. He said peaceful conduct by both candidates and supporters would help ensure a credible and orderly election process.

Egbetokun assured that the Nigeria Police Force, alongside other security agencies, is fully prepared to provide comprehensive security coverage across the state during the election. He stressed that the police would remain neutral, professional, and committed to protecting voters, electoral officials, and materials.

He also commended the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, for his proactive efforts in promoting peace through continuous engagement with stakeholders across local communities.

During the event, candidates from various political parties pledged to shun violence and urged their supporters to act responsibly. They also vowed to respect the outcome of the election as long as it reflects the will of the people.

The peace accord, according to the organisers, is a vital step toward building mutual trust among stakeholders and ensuring that the November 8, 2025 governorship election in Anambra is conducted in a peaceful atmosphere.
