Kogi To Hold Local Government Election October 2026

The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission has announced October 17, 2026, as the date for the conduct of local government elections across the state.

Chairman of the commission, Nderi Mamman, made the announcement on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting in Lokoja, the state capital. He said preparations were underway to conduct chairmanship and councillorship elections in all 21 local government areas and 239 electoral wards.

Mamman explained that the notice of election was issued in line with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which requires that an election notice be released at least 360 days before the poll.

He added that on October 24, 2025, the commission would publish a detailed timetable outlining the schedule of activities for the 2026 elections. This would include the conduct of party primaries, submission of candidates’ lists, publication of nominated candidates, and the campaign period.

According to him, only political parties duly registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission will be eligible to sponsor candidates, in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the Kogi State Electoral Law.

The commission urged all parties and aspirants to adhere strictly to the electoral guidelines to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election process.

Stakeholders at the meeting welcomed the early release of the election notice, describing it as a proactive step that allows adequate preparation. They also called for increased voter education and public awareness to boost participation and promote transparency during the exercise.
