Peter Obi Meets Commonwealth Leader In London Over Democracy And Youth Empowerment

Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has visited the Commonwealth Headquarters in London as part of his ongoing global engagements on democracy, good governance, and youth development.

Obi was joined by his wife, Margaret Obi, during the visit to meet Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, the first African woman to head the 56-member organisation of English-speaking nations.

In a post shared on his X account, Obi said their meeting centred on strengthening democracy, advancing the rule of law, expanding access to education, and empowering young people across Commonwealth countries.

He noted that with over 2.5 billion people under the age of 30, the Commonwealth’s greatest resource lies in its youth. Obi said Nigeria, in particular, has the potential to rise through investment in education, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

He explained that when young people are properly trained and supported, they can become drivers of national progress and key contributors to global growth. He also described youth unemployment as a major issue requiring practical action such as vocational training, better education, and strong backing for small and medium-scale businesses.

Secretary-General Botchwey, in her remarks, said her priorities include youth engagement, education, and job creation. She stressed that empowering young people remains essential for safeguarding democracy and promoting inclusive societies.

Obi commended Botchwey for her leadership and commitment to democratic values, describing her as a visionary leader whose example continues to unite and inspire the Commonwealth community.
