The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has praised President Bola Tinubu for granting state pardons to late nationalist Herbert Macaulay and 174 others, describing the move as a reflection of leadership, fairness, and compassion.

The commendation followed Thursday’s decision by the National Council of State, which approved Tinubu’s recommendation to pardon several individuals, including Macaulay, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Maj. Gen. Mamman Vatsa, and former lawmaker Farouk Lawan.

The President also granted clemency to 82 inmates, converted seven death sentences to life imprisonment, and reduced the prison terms of 65 others. The move came after a review by the Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, chaired by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.

Reacting to the development, APC spokesman Seye Oladejo said the decision shows Tinubu’s commitment to justice with a human face. He noted that honouring Herbert Macaulay restores the dignity of one of Nigeria’s earliest freedom fighters and corrects a long-standing historical injustice.
Oladejo added that the pardons offer hope and reintegration opportunities for living beneficiaries while reinforcing the President’s belief in forgiveness as a tool for unity and national healing. He said the gesture aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks not only economic progress but also moral and social renewal.
