Retired Nigerian Air Vice Marshal Dies on London–Abuja Flight

A British Airways flight from London to Abuja made an emergency diversion to Barcelona on Monday after a retired Nigerian Air Vice Marshal from Anambra State died mid-flight.

The incident happened in the early hours of Monday, October 6, after the aircraft departed London’s Heathrow Airport around 11 p.m. on Sunday. About halfway through the journey, at roughly 1:30 a.m., the pilot declared a medical emergency when the passenger, said to be in his early 80s, became critically ill.

Sources revealed that the retired officer, one of the few surviving Air Vice Marshals from Anambra, had been unwell and was returning to Nigeria for further medical care before he passed away.

Cabin crew and medical professionals on board made efforts to revive him, but he could not be saved. The situation caused brief panic among passengers, with reports that a pregnant woman also experienced distress during the incident.

The pilot diverted the flight to El Prat Airport in Barcelona, where emergency services were on standby to receive the aircraft.

British Airways later apologised to passengers for the disruption and offered assistance through its Live Chat service.

A replacement aircraft was deployed, with the rescheduled flight expected to leave Barcelona at 2:50 p.m. local time and arrive in Abuja by 5:45 p.m. Nigerian time.
