The Nasarawa State Government has started disbursing over N592 million in bursary allowances to 16,756 students of the state studying in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

Governor Abdullahi Sule, who flagged off the exercise in Akwanga on Thursday, said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to education, which he described as the top priority of the government. He noted that the sector received 36 percent of the 2025 state budget.

Sule said the government has restored international scholarships, with 155 students currently studying abroad in various fields, while also supporting nursing students and others in local universities to boost manpower. He added that the state also paid the 2025 NECO registration fees for more than 24,000 secondary school students to ease the burden on parents.

The governor directed the scholarship board to begin preparations for the 2025/2026 academic session allowances.
Executive Secretary of the Nasarawa State Scholarship Board, Hajiya Sa’adatu Yahaya, said 25,000 students applied for the bursary, but 17,762 were shortlisted after screening. Following verification, 2,006 were disqualified for not being students, leaving 16,756 beneficiaries. She disclosed that N122,108 was refunded to the state government on behalf of the delisted applicants.
She explained that beneficiaries received between N30,000 and N90,000 depending on their course of study, and assured that the process would remain transparent and accountable.
Speaking on behalf of the students, Ovey Abimiku, National President of the Nasarawa State Students Association (NASSA), thanked the governor and promised that the beneficiaries would use the funds judiciously to support their education.
