The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dissolved its state executives in Cross River and Akwa Ibom, setting up caretaker committees to run the affairs of the party in both states.

National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday, saying the decision was in line with the party’s constitution as amended in 2017.

In Cross River, the crisis followed conflicting communications over the September 27 congress. While acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, had earlier written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about a postponement, the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, directed that the congress would go ahead. Some party members gathered in Calabar, but Ologunagba clarified that no congress was held.

The NWC explained that the tenure of the state executive committee had expired after four years, hence the need for an interim structure. The caretaker committee, chaired by Bassey Eko Ewa with Bassey Joseph as acting secretary, will manage the party’s affairs in Cross River for three months starting October 1, 2025, pending fresh elections.
For Akwa Ibom, the NWC announced the dissolution of the existing executive and approved a new caretaker team led by Igwat Umoren as chairman and Harrison Ekpo as deputy chairman. Other officers include Borono Bassey as secretary, Barr. Ewa Okpo as publicity secretary, Emman Mbong as organizing secretary, Aniekan Asuquo as youth leader, and Mary Silvia Abara as woman leader, alongside several other members.
The party urged stakeholders in both states to remain united and work towards strengthening the PDP ahead of future political contests.
