Former state chairmen of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change have distanced themselves from reports suggesting they endorsed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The group clarified that a recent visit by some of its members to Atiku’s Abuja residence was a personal move that did not reflect the position of the wider forum.

The clarification came in a statement issued on Saturday by leaders of the forum, who explained that out of 37 members, only 16 have aligned with Atiku while 20 remain committed to President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress. One member from Borno State was reported dead.

The forum alleged that its members had been pressured with financial incentives by opposition figures to abandon the APC. It said nine chairmen initially defected under this pressure and seven others joined them last week, while the rest refused to yield.
Despite reaffirming loyalty to the ruling party, the forum raised concerns about what it described as continued neglect of the CPC bloc within the APC. It urged the presidency and party leadership to address the growing sense of marginalisation, warning that the bloc represents grassroots structures that once delivered millions of votes during the Buhari era.
The statement added that the gathering at Atiku’s residence was an attempt to create the impression of broad CPC support for him. The group stressed that its allegiance remains with the leadership of the CPC family, represented by Senator Tanko Al-Makura, Aminu Masari, and Tajudeen Abbas.
Atiku, who left the Peoples Democratic Party, has been consulting political figures as he weighs options for 2027. Although yet to declare formally, he is believed to be considering joining the African Democratic Congress. He has already attracted some high-profile allies, including former governors Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi, and former SGF Babachir Lawal, all of whom are working against Tinubu’s re-election bid.
