The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a five-count charge against Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, over alleged false and defamatory posts against President Bola Tinubu.

Filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, the case (FHC/ABJ/CR/481/2025) also lists X Incorporation and Meta (Facebook) as defendants.

The DSS accused Sowore of using his official X and Facebook pages in August to publish a post describing President Tinubu as “a criminal” who claimed in Brazil that corruption no longer existed in Nigeria. The agency said the post was false and intended to incite public disorder.

Prosecutors cited breaches of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Amendment Act 2024, as well as Sections 375 and 59 of the Criminal Code, which cover defamation and false information intended to cause public fear.
The charges, signed by Mohammed Babadoko Abubakar, Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, allege that Sowore’s actions were aimed at provoking unrest among Nigerians with divergent political views.
No date has been fixed for Sowore’s arraignment.
The DSS had earlier written to Sowore, warning him to take down the post or face legal consequences.
