The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamorudeen Ogunlana, has said his office cannot reinstate Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was suspended in March for alleged misconduct.

In a statement released by the Director of Information, Bullah Audu Bi-Allah, the clerk explained that his office functions only as an administrative arm of the legislature. He stressed that it lacks the power to review or overturn Senate resolutions.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, was suspended for six months on March 6. While her legal team challenged the suspension in court, the clerk noted that no ruling has nullified the decision or ordered her return.

According to the statement, the senator wrote on September 4 to notify her intention to resume duties. However, the Senate leadership maintained that the matter remains before the Court of Appeal, and that only a fresh resolution or a binding judgment can alter the suspension.
The clerk’s office dismissed accusations from the senator’s lawyers that it had acted beyond its powers. It insisted that it has operated strictly within constitutional limits and under the directives of the Senate.
Bi-Allah added that the authority to determine Akpoti-Uduaghan’s reinstatement lies solely with the Senate. He urged the public to allow the legislature and the courts to carry out their constitutional roles without interference.
