PDP Slams Plot To Block Akpoti Uduaghan From Senate

The Peoples Democratic Party has accused the leadership of the Senate of attempting to stop Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from resuming her duties after serving a six-month suspension.

The party expressed anger over reports that the Acting Clerk to the National Assembly issued a directive aimed at barring the senator from returning to her seat.

According to the opposition, the move is being driven by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and members of the All Progressives Congress in what it described as a plan to silence dissenting voices. The PDP argued that the people of Kogi Central, who elected Akpoti-Uduaghan, are being denied representation at a time when their voices are needed in national debates.

The party warned that using the National Assembly to frustrate an elected senator goes against the constitution and the rules of the Senate. It described the attempt as a threat to democracy and accused the APC-led government of seeking to weaken the opposition.

The PDP also linked the development to what it called a pattern of hostility against women in politics. It recalled allegations of harassment raised against the current Senate leadership in the past, insisting that silencing Akpoti-Uduaghan only reinforces claims of bias against female lawmakers.

In its statement, the PDP urged the Senate President to allow the senator to resume and focus on addressing questions surrounding his leadership instead of targeting political opponents. It maintained that the suspension, which had already lasted six months, was unfair and should not be used as a tool to extend punishment beyond its limit.

The party further cautioned the Acting Clerk of the National Assembly to avoid being dragged into partisan battles. It reminded him of his duty to remain neutral and serve the institution rather than act as an instrument for political manoeuvres.

Calling on international observers, rights groups, and democracy advocates, the PDP said the matter requires global attention as it touches on transparency, the rule of law, and the protection of elected officials.

The opposition concluded by reaffirming its support for Akpoti-Uduaghan, urging her to resume her duties without fear, while demanding that the Senate leadership guarantees her full reintegration into parliamentary activities.
