The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the suspension of train services on the Port Harcourt–Aba corridor, attributing the move to routine maintenance.

In a statement issued on Friday, Managing Director Dr. Kayode Opeifa said operations will remain halted until Monday, September 9, when regular services are expected to resume.

“Port Harcourt to Aba train services suspended for routine maintenance. To resume regular train services on the 9th of September 2025. We regret all inconveniences,” the NRC stated.

The corridor, part of the narrow-gauge network linking the South-East and South-South, has become a lifeline for traders and daily commuters who see it as a cheaper and safer option compared to road travel.
However, the suspension adds to growing concerns over the corporation’s reliability. The NRC recently faced criticism after a Kaduna-bound train derailed on the Abuja–Kaduna line, forcing another service shutdown.
Opeifa, while addressing reporters after that incident, said NRC engineers and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau were probing the derailment. He confirmed that six passengers sustained minor injuries and had been treated, while refunds were being processed for all affected travelers.
The NRC maintains that its trains are safe despite the recent setbacks.
