A member of the Anambra State House of Assembly representing Awka South Constituency 1, Hon. Henry Mbachu, has left the Labour Party (LP) for the Young Progressive Party (YPP).

Mbachu announced his defection in a video broadcast, saying his decision followed a careful review of YPP’s governorship candidate, Paul Chukwuma, and his manifesto, which he described as the most suitable plan for Anambra’s future.

The lawmaker pledged his full support for Chukwuma and promised to mobilise for the YPP ahead of the November 8, 2025 governorship election.

According to him, Chukwuma’s manifesto aligns with his legislative agenda and resonates strongly with the youth, offering a clear blueprint to shift Anambra from “consumption to production.”
“I am here this day to declare my defection from the Labour Party to the YPP. This decision is for the good people of Awka and Okpuno, in their best interest,” he said.
Mbachu assured his constituents that the YPP offers the best option for their collective progress, stressing that Chukwuma’s vision for industries across the state and his commitment to prioritising Awka and Okpuno in government projects convinced him to make the switch.
“This decision is in the best interest of Awka South,” he concluded.
