The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has warned that it will declare a trade dispute and withdraw services in public polytechnics and monotechnics if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands after a 21-day ultimatum.

The threat was issued on Wednesday, September 3, by Masopa Nurudeen, the South West Zone C Coordinator of ASUP, during a briefing at Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade. He said the ultimatum was based on a resolution reached by the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) on August 14, 2025.

ASUP accused the government of failing to honour agreements dating back to 2009 and 2010. The union said the Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, could not feign ignorance of these agreements, adding that documents exist to prove that the government is bound by them.

The issues fueling the dispute include non-payment of Peculiar Academic Allowance, arrears of the 25/35 percent salary adjustment, outsourcing of accreditation personnel, non-release of promotion arrears, and stalled renegotiation of the 2010 ASUP/FGN agreement. Others are the non-release of the 2023 NEEDS Assessment Intervention Fund, failure to implement promotion in state-owned institutions, refusal to domesticate the 2019 Polytechnic Act, and unresolved discrimination against HND holders in public service.
ASUP also accused the government of abandoning the creation of a Polytechnic Commission, despite recommendations from a committee set up by the Federal Ministry of Education and a public hearing at the National Assembly in May 2025. The union insists that such a commission is crucial for strengthening the polytechnic system and granting the institutions the power to award B.Tech degrees in specialised fields.
Nurudeen revealed that the government has not released the 2023 and 2024 NEEDS Assessment funds for polytechnics, while lecturers are still owed 7 percent Peculiar Academic Allowance because the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission has not issued the circular for implementation.
He warned that once the ultimatum expires, ASUP leaders will convene a NEC meeting in Abuja to direct members to withdraw their services, regardless of ongoing examinations, until the government addresses the union’s demands.
