The Plateau State Government has allocated ₦2 billion in its supplementary budget to support youth empowerment through skills training and entrepreneurship programmes.

Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Musa Ashoms, announced this on Monday during the launch of a new batch of trainees under the Plateau Youth Entrepreneurship and Skills Acquisition scheme, held in Lamingo, Jos North. The programme is being implemented in partnership with the Federal Government’s Skills for Wealth initiative.

Ashoms said the intervention will target sectors such as agribusiness, ICT, and the creative industry, noting that Plateau is positioning itself as a digital hub. He revealed that Governor Caleb Mutfwang has approved the conversion of the Joseph Gomwalk House into an ICT centre, while the Federal Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy will lay 30km of fibre optic cables across the state.

According to him, 250 youths drawn from the 17 local government areas will undergo one month of training in ICT, fashion design, leatherwork, shoemaking, and bag production. The programme will run in two batches throughout September 2025.
He described the move as a deliberate and strategic effort to empower young people for wealth creation.
Zonal Coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Deborah Pitmang, said beneficiaries will be provided with start-up kits after completing the training.
Some trainees applauded the initiative, with one participant, John Davou, saying it would open opportunities in the digital space.
