A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Prof. Haruna Yerima, has declared that President Bola Tinubu will secure victory in the 2027 presidential election if he runs on the same ticket with Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The comment came after the Northern Ethnic Nationality Forum advised the President to drop Shettima and choose a Christian running mate from Plateau, Benue, or Taraba, claiming that repeating a Muslim-Muslim ticket could fuel fears of an Islamisation agenda and hand the opposition an easy campaign point.
Yerima dismissed the group’s position, describing it as baseless. He maintained that the Tinubu-Shettima ticket remained strong and that fears over religious bias had no foundation. He argued that suggestions of Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi defeating the APC in 2027 were unrealistic and not backed by facts.
According to Yerima, Shettima was carefully selected by Tinubu after weighing loyalty, experience, and political balance. He stressed that any attempt to dictate a running mate to the President would fail, adding that Tinubu would reject such interference outright.
The APC stalwart warned against injecting religion into political strategy, saying the administration had already shown inclusiveness through its appointments and policies over the past two years. He insisted that Shettima had proven himself capable and loyal in office, and that retaining him would strengthen the APC’s chances in the next election.
