Benue Assembly Suspends Four Lawmakers Over Speaker Dispute

The Benue State House of Assembly has suspended four of its members for six months following allegations that they attempted to remove the Speaker, Aondona Dajoh.

Those affected are Alfred Berger, representing Makurdi North; Terna Shimawua of Kian; Cyril Ekong of Obi; and James Umoru of Apa constituency. The suspension was announced during Friday’s plenary after a motion raised by Majority Leader Saater Tiseer.

The House leadership accused the lawmakers of trying to create unrest within the Assembly during a failed move to impeach the Speaker on Thursday night. Members resolved that their actions amounted to an attempt to destabilise the legislative arm.

After the motion was adopted, the Speaker ordered the Sergeant-at-Arms to escort the suspended lawmakers out of the chamber, bringing the session to an abrupt turn.

The suspension is expected to last six months, during which the four lawmakers will be barred from legislative duties.
