The Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, has called for restraint from supporters of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, over the controversy surrounding the alleged conferment of the title “Okanlomo of Yorubaland” on businessman Dotun Sanusi.

In a statement issued in Ibadan on Thursday, the monarch cautioned against media exchanges and emotional outbursts that could drag the revered Yoruba thrones into disrepute. He stressed that the reported installation was speculative and should not be allowed to generate unnecessary tension.

Oba Owoade had earlier faulted the move, insisting the Ooni lacked the authority to bestow a title covering the entire Yorubaland.

Responding, the Olugbon urged Yoruba sons and daughters at home and abroad to remain calm, noting that both the Alaafin and the Ooni are committed to peace and unity.

“The latest controversy over the alleged conferment of Okanlomo of Yorubaland on Dotun Sanusi is unnecessary. I am in touch with both the Alaafin and the Ooni, and I can confirm they are not interested in escalating the matter,” he said.
He appealed for an end to public comments, warning that dragging traditional rulers into media battles runs against Yoruba values of unity, respect, and honour for the throne.
“Our culture of respect for monarchs must not be overshadowed by emotions. Obas’ thrones are too sacred to be desecrated by social media content creators,” he added.
The Olugbon emphasized that Yoruba monarchs are focused on development, peace, and unity, urging all to uphold the omoluabi ethos and protect the sanctity of the traditional institutions.
