President Bola Tinubu has approved a major reduction in the cost of dialysis sessions in federal hospitals, bringing relief to thousands of Nigerians battling kidney-related diseases.

The price per session has been cut from N50,000 to N12,000 under a new subsidy scheme.

The intervention is already in effect across major federal medical centres and teaching hospitals spread across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Facilities currently offering the subsidised treatment include Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Ebute-Metta in Lagos, FMC Jabi in Abuja, University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, and FMC Owerri. Others are University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, FMC Abeokuta, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, FMC Azare, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, and University of Calabar Teaching Hospital.

More hospitals are expected to join the programme before the end of the year, expanding access for patients in need of regular dialysis. The move is part of the government’s wider plan to strengthen healthcare delivery and make lifesaving treatments more affordable.
This policy comes after earlier health sector reforms by the administration, including last year’s approval of free caesarean sections in federal hospitals to improve maternal healthcare.
The presidency described the initiative as another step in Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at ensuring Nigerians are not denied essential medical treatment because of high costs.
