The Labour Party caretaker committee in Lagos has declared that Pastor Dayo Ekong, the former state chairperson, remains suspended and has no authority to speak on behalf of the party after her recent criticism of Peter Obi.

Ekong had posted on social media that Obi’s strong showing in the 2023 election was not only about his personal appeal but also about party structures and grassroots support. She argued that the momentum was fading, accusing him of inconsistency and divisive decisions, and linked his setbacks in Imo and Edo to poor political strategy.

In response, the Lagos caretaker chairman, Rotimi Odunaike, dismissed her comments as unauthorised. He said Ekong had been suspended on May 12, 2025, for misconduct, constitutional violations, and anti-party activities, and therefore could not speak for the party in any capacity.

Odunaike accused Ekong of worsening internal divisions during her tenure, claiming her leadership failures were part of the reason electoral bodies failed to recognise LP candidates in recent Lagos by-elections. He described her criticism of Obi as self-serving, insisting that Obi had delivered major electoral gains for the party in 2023 before, in his words, “saboteurs within” weakened its structure.
He stressed that her suspension remains valid and binding, warning the public and media not to be misled by her statements. He urged members to focus on rebuilding the party under what he called legitimate leadership, saying the Labour Party in Lagos and across the country is working towards a stronger platform ahead of future elections.
Odunaike closed by stating that the party would no longer engage Ekong, insisting her credibility ended with her removal.
