The palace of the Ooni of Ife has brushed aside a 48-hour ultimatum issued by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, over the recent conferment of the Okanlomo of Yorubaland title on businessman Dotun Sanusi.
The Alaafin had on Monday faulted the Ooni, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, insisting that only the Alaafin holds the authority to bestow such a Yorubaland-wide title. He warned that the Ooni must withdraw the title within 48 hours.
Reacting on Tuesday, the Ooni’s spokesperson dismissed the warning in a brief Facebook post, describing it as a “mere joke” and adding, “48 hours my foot.”
The public exchange marks the latest flare-up in a long-standing rivalry between the two revered Yoruba stools, raising fresh debate over traditional authority and the extent of powers held by each monarch.
