The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Osun State chapter, has raised concerns over fresh attempts to take control of local government funds in the state despite existing court rulings.

Speaking at a press conference in Osogbo on Monday, the union disclosed that allocations meant for the councils had been withheld since February 2025. It alleged that some powerful interests were working to divert the funds through backdoor legal tactics.

State president of NULGE, Dr. Nathaniel Kehinde Ogungbangbe, explained that the Osun government had earlier approached the Federal High Court in May to prevent the funds from being redirected to sacked All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmen and councillors, whose removal had already been upheld by competent courts.

He said that although the Federal High Court ordered all parties to maintain the status quo, there were efforts to illegally create accounts for the dismissed officials until the Court of Appeal stopped the move on June 13. According to him, recent attempts to rush the matter for hearing in Abuja during court vacation raised fresh suspicions.

Ogungbangbe argued that the urgency claimed by the defendants was not genuine since they had been served court processes months earlier. He also faulted claims by the Attorney-General of the Federation’s office that service was not effected, stressing that the bailiff had already sworn to an affidavit of service.
The union maintained that the Court of Appeal had already ruled in favour of the February 2025 local government election in Osun and that the removal of the APC officials was valid, leaving them with no tenure to reclaim. It warned that using the Abuja vacation court to override this decision would amount to subverting justice.
NULGE called on the judiciary to resist pressure and reject the application for vacation hearing. It also urged Nigerians, especially the people of Osun State, to remain watchful to ensure that local government resources are not diverted through questionable legal manoeuvres.
The union vowed that any attempt to deny councils access to their rightful funds would be opposed by every lawful means available.
