The Indigenous People of Biafra has said that only its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has the authority to appoint or remove lawyers representing him or the group.

In a memo issued by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, the group stated that this rule is part of its internal protocol and governance framework. It explained that the power to decide on legal representation lies solely with Kanu, whether he is in detention or not. In his absence or if he is unable to act, the responsibility can only be taken up by people he personally nominated for that purpose.

According to the statement, all the listed attorneys were personally appointed by Kanu, and their roles remain valid unless he publicly changes them. The group said Ejiofor continues as Principal Counsel for IPOB and is still handling the organisation’s legal matters.
IPOB stressed that all lawyers representing Kanu automatically represent the group, whether they are involved in court proceedings, research, advisory roles, or jurisdiction-specific matters. It called on members and the public to maintain unity and clarity on the issue to avoid internal and external disputes.
