Legacy FM Owner Denies Political Pressure In Suspension Of General Manager

The owner of Legacy FM in Ebonyi State, Senator Obinna Ogba, has dismissed claims that Governor Francis Nwifuru influenced the suspension of the station’s General Manager, Godfrey Chikwere.

Chikwere was suspended on August 9 after comments made during a talk show were perceived by some listeners as an attack on the governor. The remarks reportedly included describing the governor as a weak leader, a view that sparked mixed reactions among the public. While some faulted his tone, others insisted his comments and writings were within professional bounds.

Ogba, who previously represented Ebonyi North in the Senate, told reporters in Abakaliki that the decision was purely an internal matter. He said Chikwere had repeatedly failed to follow the station’s code of conduct despite several warnings, and this left no choice but to act. He stressed that his relationship with the governor played no role in the move, adding that the station existed before Nwifuru assumed office.

The former Senate Committee Chairman on Sports expressed displeasure over suggestions that government interference was involved, calling such claims an insult to his integrity.

Chikwere, known in Ebonyi’s social circles as “Baby Mouth,” rejected claims that his comments were an attack on the governor. He maintained that he was simply doing his job as a broadcaster, with no hidden agenda or personal interest, and insisted his remarks were in the governor’s best interest.

The station’s Manager of Programmes and Administration, Chukwuma Onwe, also opposed the suspension, stating that Chikwere’s exchange with a guest analyst was constructive and focused on allegations of official vehicles being sold by some of the governor’s appointees.
