Stakeholders Slam WAEC Over Fluctuating 2025 WASSCE Results, Demand Probe

Education stakeholders have criticised the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for revising the 2025 WASSCE pass rate from 38.32% to 62.96% within weeks, describing the move as damaging to the credibility of Nigeria’s education system.

The controversy began when WAEC announced on July 4 that only 38.32% of the 1,969,313 candidates earned five credits, including English and Mathematics. The mass failure sparked outrage, with calls for paper cancellations in key subjects. WAEC later admitted to “technical glitches” and suspended access to results. When the portal reopened on August 10, the pass rate had jumped to 62.96%, which WAEC attributed to “serialisation issues” in Mathematics, English, Biology, and Economics.

Exam Ethics Marshall International founder, Ike Onyechere, labelled the development “a national disaster,” urging the Presidency, National Assembly, and Federal Ministry of Education to investigate and reshuffle WAEC’s leadership. He dismissed WAEC’s explanation as “technical excuses” masking deeper administrative failings.

Teachers and parents also expressed doubts over the integrity of the results. Oluwaseun Omotubora faulted WAEC for releasing flawed scores without first reviewing scripts or conducting fresh exams in affected subjects. Parents Ifeoluwa Atteh and Nathaniel Adamu called for independent audits and greater investment in education to prevent such lapses.

Some candidates confirmed significant upgrades in their results, with failing grades in English or Mathematics revised to credits. While many welcomed the change for opening university admission opportunities, they also warned that such reversals could erode trust in WAEC’s examinations.
