The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that fresh voter registration will begin nationwide on August 18, 2025, starting with an online pre-registration phase.

The announcement was made on Thursday by National Commissioner Sam Olumekun. He explained that physical registration at INEC centres will follow on August 25, one week after the online process begins. Both options will run side by side until August 30, 2026.

The commission confirmed that registration will take place in 811 centres across the country, including all 774 local government areas, state offices, and the Federal Capital Territory. The centres will operate on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., excluding public holidays.

To help citizens find registration points easily, INEC is introducing a Live Locator tool that can be accessed online. The commission has also provided dedicated phone lines for each state to assist those who need more information during the registration period.
As part of its update, INEC said it has received eight new applications from groups seeking recognition as political parties. This brings the total number of associations that have submitted letters of intent to 151.
Information about the new requests, including proposed names, logos, acronyms, office addresses, and interim leadership, has been made available on INEC’s website and social media pages.
The commission added that it is currently shortlisting the associations that meet the basic requirements before allowing them to move to the next stage of the registration process. Final details will be made public after the upcoming bye-elections scheduled for August 16 in 12 states.
