Air traffic services across Nigeria are at risk of disruption as aviation unions have declared an indefinite strike starting Monday, August 11, 2025.

The action targets the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) over a lingering salary dispute.

The unions made the decision public through a statement released on Thursday, August 7. It was jointly signed by four leading bodies representing aviation workers — the National Union of Air Transport Employees, Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service, Technical and Recreational Services Employees.

The unions said the strike was triggered by the government’s failure to implement a new salary structure for NAMA workers, despite reaching an agreement with the agency over eight months ago. According to them, the issue has dragged on for too long without action from the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.

In a letter dated July 31, the unions gave Minister Festus Keyamo a seven-day ultimatum to resolve the matter. With that deadline now expired and no progress made, workers have been instructed to withdraw their services by 5:00 a.m. on Monday.
The unions warned that the strike will continue indefinitely until the outstanding salary adjustments are addressed. They have also informed airline operators, airport officials, and travelers to prepare for possible interruptions and consider other travel plans.
The statement urged NAMA staff to comply fully with the directive. It noted that only official updates from the national secretariats of the unions would determine future decisions regarding the strike.
Copies of the notice were sent to major stakeholders in the aviation sector, including the managing directors of NAMA and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, airport police authorities, security agencies, and the Airline Operators of Nigeria.
With no signs of a resolution, Nigeria’s airspace could face serious delays and flight cancellations from next week.
