Peter Obi Builds Another Boys Hostel in Anambra School

Peter Obi, former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has begun construction of a new boys’ hostel at Dominican Sisters College, Abatete, Anambra State.

The project, which costs N100 million, marks the third building Obi has supported in the school and the second hostel for male students.

The foundation for the hostel was laid during the school’s 2024/25 graduation ceremony, which began with a Mass. Obi announced an initial donation of N25 million and assured the school community that the building would be completed soon. He said the effort is part of his ongoing support for educational institutions across the country.

Obi thanked the Dominican Sisters for their dedication and described himself as a close member of their community, having worshipped in their church several times since his time as governor. He explained that the goal of his contributions is to support a better society, where education plays a central role in development.

While the full funding of the hostel may not rest on him alone, Obi hinted that another benefactor from Abatete is also supporting the project and may be publicly acknowledged later. He advised graduating students to take education seriously, saying it had shaped his life and future.

The school’s first principal, Rev. Sister Pia Mary Folashade Adesanya, praised Obi for his consistent support over the years. She recalled how he turned down a birthday gift in the form of a house from a bank where he once served as a director. Instead, he requested that buildings be constructed in three schools, including Dominican Sisters College.

Sister Adesanya detailed more ways Obi has helped the school. At a time when the school struggled to pay salaries, Obi stepped in to help for three months. He encouraged the conversion of the school into a boarding facility, donated school buses, provided scholarships, and gave out computers.

Now the Superior General of Holy Family Sisters of the Needy, Sister Adesanya described Obi’s impact as transformational, saying he had supported the school through its toughest moments and helped it grow into what it is today. She credited him with turning the institution from a struggling day school into a thriving boarding school with lasting infrastructure.
