Peter Obi Marks 64th Birthday In Rome With Prayers And Charity Appeal

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi spent his 64th birthday quietly in Rome, Italy, at the historic Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs, using the moment to reflect, pray, and call attention to the suffering in Nigeria.

Obi shared a personal message on Facebook, thanking Nigerians and others around the world for their birthday wishes. He also took the opportunity to remind the public of his decision not to hold personal birthday celebrations. Instead, he urged those wishing to celebrate him to support the less privileged and contribute to health and education causes.

He recalled how, as Governor of Anambra State, he often redirected funds meant for parties or gifts to build classrooms, donate computers, and provide buses for schools and communities. Obi said that tradition has continued over the years and remains his way of giving back meaningfully.

During his visit to Rome, he said he offered prayers for Nigeria, asking for divine guidance for the country’s leaders and hoping they would come to understand that public money should be used for the public’s good.

Obi also expressed concern over the growing hardship across the country, saying personal celebrations feel out of place when so many Nigerians are struggling to survive. He said the current situation has deepened his resolve to keep supporting institutions that serve the people directly.

As his birthday coincided with his time in the ancient church, he said he used the holy space to pray for a more just, compassionate, and equitable Nigeria.
