Peter Obi Free to Contest Presidential Ticket Says ADC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has made it clear that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi will not be barred from seeking its 2027 presidential ticket, countering recent claims about his eligibility within the party.

Obi, who came third in the 2023 presidential election, has been the subject of speculation about his next political move. Although he has yet to officially join a new party after tensions with the Labour Party, the ADC says no rules will prevent him from competing for its ticket if he chooses to.

The party also addressed reports involving former Kaduna State governor Nasir el-Rufai, whose possible alliance with the ADC has stirred debate. While the party acknowledged that neither Obi nor el-Rufai is currently a full member, it stressed that the door remains open to all credible figures interested in advancing its agenda.

This clarification comes as political alignments begin to shift ahead of the 2027 election. The ADC has positioned itself as a growing alternative for those disillusioned with the traditional political powerhouses.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu remains in the public spotlight following his attendance at the eight-day Fidau prayer for the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona. Newspapers reported that Tinubu credited the monarch for backing his political journey and expressed confidence in his chances at the 2027 polls.

As the political field gradually reshapes, parties like the ADC are emerging as possible platforms for key players like Obi, who still enjoys a strong following among youth and urban voters.
