Makinde Says New ADC Coalition No Threat to PDP

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has said the recent alliance formed under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) poses no challenge to the strength or future of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking in Akure, Ondo State, on Wednesday, Makinde addressed journalists at a colloquium held to mark the 10th coronation anniversary of the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi. He described the political coalition involving some former PDP figures as a normal part of political life and nothing to worry about.

Makinde explained that political parties operate in an open space where people are free to join or leave based on their interests. According to him, the PDP remains a strong and structured platform, and any exit by dissatisfied members should not be viewed as a crisis.

He maintained that the PDP has a long-standing legacy and continues to stand firm despite changing political tides. The governor described political alignment and re-alignment as common during election cycles, and said what matters most is the progress of the country, not individual ambitions.

In a separate development, the African Democratic Congress issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to internal stability and clarity on leadership in Ondo State. The party confirmed Mrs. Sidikatu Ojo as its only recognised Chairperson in the state and rejected recent attempts by some individuals to install parallel leadership at the local government level.

The ADC urged members and the public to disregard any alternative lists or appointments announced by factions outside the party’s constitutionally recognised leadership. It warned that anyone acting outside the party’s directive would be seen as undermining unity and order.

The party leadership also reiterated its focus on preparing for future elections and building stronger grassroots support. It assured members that efforts are ongoing to strengthen internal cohesion and maintain transparency.

As political movements continue ahead of the 2027 general elections, both PDP and ADC are positioning themselves with different strategies. While the PDP downplays defections, the ADC is working to manage internal control amid growing attention following its new coalition arrangement with prominent political figures.
