Olubadan’s Death Halts Chieftaincy Hopes in Ibadan

The passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, has brought an unexpected pause to ongoing celebrations and left many aspiring chieftaincy title holders in limbo.

His death has cast a shadow over what was set to be a week of high-profile festivities in the Oyo State capital.

Oba Olakulehin died on Monday after a prolonged illness, just days before the first anniversary of his coronation. The monarch’s passing has forced the cancellation of several grand events, including the conferment of traditional and honorary titles on prominent individuals. Among those affected are federal lawmakers, entertainers, and other influential Nigerians who had made extensive plans to mark their new titles in style.

Preparations had been intense in the days leading up to the ceremonies. Radio and TV stations were already running promotional jingles. Advertisements had gone up in newspapers. Caterers had been booked. Guests were ready. Aso ebi — the ceremonial clothing shared among friends and family — had been distributed. Cows were bought. And unconfirmed payments were said to have been made to palace officials to facilitate the conferment process.

But the mood in Ibadan turned from celebration to mourning the moment news of the monarch’s death broke. The planned press conference, a commemorative football competition, and even a scheduled book launch were all cancelled. The Olubadan Football Tournament, which had kicked off just 48 hours earlier, was suspended indefinitely.

Some aspiring title holders were said to be quietly nursing their disappointment. Many had already invested both emotionally and financially in the ceremony. An aide to a former Olubadan explained why Ibadan titles are in such high demand — especially among politicians. With Ibadan often seen as the political heartbeat of Yorubaland, such chieftaincy honours are viewed as symbols of influence, prestige, and even subtle endorsement for higher office.

It remains uncertain whether those who had made financial contributions will receive refunds. However, insiders note that during a similar situation in a past reign, money was returned to the would-be honorees and the palace was praised for its fairness. Still, any decision now lies with the incoming Olubadan, who will set the tone for how the process moves forward.

Attention has now shifted to succession. According to Ibadan’s traditional system, the Otun Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, is next in line to ascend the throne. Though he is reportedly undergoing medical treatment outside the city, sources close to the palace believe he will return in the coming days.

Once the traditional two-week mourning period ends, the process of naming the new Olubadan will begin. Palace drummers will resume at Oba Ladoja’s Bodija residence — a cultural signifier that succession activities are underway. The Olubadan Advisory Council will then notify him officially of Oba Olakulehin’s passing. His nomination as the 44th Olubadan will be moved by Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, and seconded by the Osi Olubadan, Oba Eddy Oyewole.

Until the new monarch is confirmed and the palace returns to normal activity, hopeful title recipients must wait. Whether their dreams are postponed or completely reset will depend on the decisions of the next Olubadan.
