The announcement was made following the death of Oba Jimoh Oyewumi Ajagungbade III in December 2021. The late Oba reigned for 48 years and passed away at the age of 95.

The appointment of Olaoye was endorsed by the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde.

However, the decision has been disputed, leading to legal action.

It should be recalled that Abdulwahab Laoye, Chairman of the Laoye ruling house’s Screening Committee, had denied any selection by the family for the vacant Soun of Ogbomoso throne.

The newspaper reported that the news of Olaoye’s selection was dismissed as unfounded social media speculation. The ruling house had also expressed surprised by rumours of Ghandi Afolabi, a pastor with the RCCG, being chosen as the new Soun.
