BREAKING: Nigeria’s Ex-Finance Minister Okonjo-Iweala emerges World Trade Organisation DG

Nigeria’s former Minister of Finance and Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has emerged as the new Director-General of World Trade Organisation (WTO) after defeating her major contender by a wide margin.

The former minister polled 104 votes from 164 member countries to defeat her South Korea’s trade minister opponent, at the final stage of the race.

Various individual nominations was sent in by respective governments for the post of WTO Director-General to succeed the former Director-General, Mr Roberto Azevêdo, who had announced he was stepping down on 31 August 2020.

Amongst three women, Ms Yoo Myung-hee from Korea, Ms Amina C. Mohamed from Kenya, and Dr. Okonjo Iweala from Nigeria, Okonjo Iweala was appointed as the New Director General.

She becomes the first African to head the WTO.

The body is expected to announce her as the new DG by 3pm Nigerian time.
