The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State has raised concern over the refusal of the All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the State to ressolve the three weeks old strike action embarked upon by doctors in the State.

The party said it was inhumane on the part of the government to have allowed a total shutdown of all public health institutions in the State, thereby causing loss of lives.

Secretary of the PDP Caretaker Committee in Ekiti State, Prince Diran Odeyemi, in a statement on Monday, said it was distasteful for the government to have allowed doctors in the State to be on strike for three weeks in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

Odeyemi called on well-meaning Nigerians, especially leaders of the APC in the country to beg Governor Kayode Fayemi to desist from his hardline attitude towards the welfare of the people of Ekiti State.
He said it was worrisome that the State Government’s “I don’t care attitude” has paralysed activities in the 19 General Hospitals, three State Specialist Hospitals and all the Primary Healthcare Centres across the Ekiti State, leaving the people at the mercy of private hospitals and local traditional healers.
“How can doctors be on strike for three weeks and the government will keep acting as if nothing is wrong? How can a government purportedly enthroned by the people be this irresponsible to the people?

“And to say that this is happening during the COVID-19 pandemic makes it more dangerous and alarming ,” Odeyemi said.
Speaking on the exodus of doctors from Ekiti State, the PDP said; “One of the hallmarks of Governor Fayemi and his APC in Ekiti State is victimization of workers.
“It was only during PDP governments that workers were employed in Ekiti. During Fayemi’s first tenure as governor, hundreds of teachers were demoted while several others were sacked. And when he returned in 2018, his first assignment was to sack over 2,000 workers and another 1,000 in the State University.
“Out of the 20 doctors employed in 2015 by the PDP government of Governor Ayo Fayose 14 have left due to poor condition of services while only six remains yet Governor Fayemi remains unconcerned.
“Also, out of the 20 specialists/consultants employed in 2016, 15 of them have resigned due to poor government indifference to their legitimate demands, a situation which has reduced the total numbers of Doctors in Ekiti from 180 to just 71.”
“Yet, the State Government is carrying on as if nothing is wrong while the people are bearing the brunt, with many lives now being lost on hourly basis. This is sadly irresponsible and we condemn it totally as a responsible opposition party.”
